CFO - Carbon Footprint for Organization

Organizational Carbon Footprint

The total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted from all activities of an organization, measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂eq). CFO assessment is a crucial tool helping organizations understand their impact, manage emissions, and strategically plan reductions effectively.

Emission Scopes (3 Main Areas)
SCOPE I: Direct EmissionsGHGs released from activities directly controlled by the organization, such as fuel combustion in machinery, company vehicle usage, or refrigerant leakage.
SCOPE II: Energy Indirect EmissionsGHGs generated from the production of energy purchased by the organization, such as electricity, heat, or steam.
SCOPE III: Other Indirect EmissionsGHGs from other activities in the value chain not directly controlled by the organization, such as employee commuting, third-party transportation, and waste management.
Benefits of CFO Assessment
For Businesses:
  • Identify significant GHG emission sources for effective cost and emission reduction planning.
  • Gain competitive advantage and enhance corporate image.
  • Reduced emissions can potentially be converted into carbon credits.
For Government:
  • Provides crucial data for driving national policies and managing overall GHG emissions.

CFP - Carbon Footprint of Products

Product Carbon Footprint

The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted throughout the "product life cycle", from raw material acquisition, production, transportation, use, to end-of-life disposal, calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂eq) per product unit.

CFP information helps consumers choose more environmentally friendly products, acting as a key mechanism to encourage manufacturers to improve processes, reduce GHG emissions, and enhance competitiveness in the global market.

Product Life Cycle Stages
Raw Material Acquisition: Mining, cultivation, resource extraction.
Production: Processing raw materials into finished products.
Distribution: Transport from factory to retailers and consumers.
Use Phase: Energy or resources consumed during product use.
End-of-Life Management: Disposal, recycling, or reuse.
Carbon Footprint Labeling on Products

Labeling provides consumers with information on the product's GHG emissions, offering several benefits:

  • For Consumers: Aids decision-making to choose products with lower environmental impact.
  • For Producers: Encourages improvements in technology and production processes towards environmental friendliness.
  • For the Country: Enhances the competitiveness of Thai products in global markets increasingly focused on environmental issues.

Net-Zero - Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Ultimate Sustainability Goal

A state of balance where the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere equals the amount removed or sequestered. It doesn't mean zero emissions, but rather achieving a balance so that the atmospheric concentration of GHGs no longer increases.

Net Zero Pathway

A clear plan or operational guideline for an organization to continuously reduce GHG emissions and offset the remainder through various methods, aiming for the Net Zero target in the future.

TGO Net Zero Certification Levels

The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) defines Net Zero certification levels for various sectors:

OrganizationTwo levels: Certification for the "Net Zero Pathway" and certification upon "Achievement" of the Net Zero target.
ProductCovers goods and services that have offset all carbon emissions throughout their life cycle.
EventCovers all types of events, such as meetings, seminars, concerts, and trade shows.
PersonFor individuals wishing to offset the carbon footprint from their daily activities.
